Students may travel out of the country during break periods, or in special circumstances for a short period of time during the semester. Please submit the following form to receive a travel signature on your I-20.

•  about Travel and Re-Entry for F1 visa holders.

If you travel outside of the U.S. and re-enter on or after September 15, 2026, you will be subject to new federal regulations. Your I-94 will no longer display 鈥淒/S鈥� (Duration of Status). Instead, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will assign a fixed Admit Until Date. 

• Current Students: Your I-94 Admit Until Date will be issued for your I-20 Program End Date plus thirty (30) days (up to a maximum of four (4) years per authorization period). 
• OPT/STEM OPT Students: Your I-94 Admit Until Date will match the expiration date on your EAD card plus thirty (30) days. 
• The grace period for students to depart the U.S. following program completion (if not applying for OPT,STEM OPT, or an Extension of Stay) is reduced from sixty (60) days to thirty (30) days. 

 

We strongly advise against international travel if you have a pending Form I-539 (Extension of Stay) and/or Form I-765 (OPT/STEM OPT) application with USCIS. Departing the U.S. while an application is pending may be considered an abandonment of your request by USCIS/CBP and could result in denied re-entry into the U.S.
