Who Should Apply: Students whose I-20 end date is approaching and will not complete their program by the I-20 end date.

Ineligibility: Students currently on academic probation are not eligible for an extension.

Deadline to Submit:

• Must be submitted before the I-20 end date. Students should submit the request at least 30 days before the I-20 end date when possible.
  
• Late submissions cannot be processed and will result in loss of F-1 status.
  

Required Financial Documents: Email the following to ISSS@ucmo.edu

Submit updated bank statement and signed declaration of financial support.

• Dated within the past 6 months
• On official bank letterhead
• Minimum balance for one full year of study: see for amount

Academic Department Requirement: Request your academic advisor or department to submit the on your behalf. It will include:

• New expected program completion date
• Reason for the delay
• List of remaining courses

New Program Extension Regulations

Beginning September 15, 2026, extending your I-20 program end date requires a two-step process: submitting a program extension request at our office and filing Form I-539 (Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status) with USCIS. 

• You must complete and submit your I-539 application to USCIS at least thirty (30) to sixty (60) days before the Program End Date listed on your I-20 to ensure timely processing. 
• As long as USCIS receives your form I-539 on or before your current I-20 end date, you remain authorized to stay and may continue your studies while your application is pending. 
• A timely filed I-539 Extension of Stay application extends your current on-campus employment authorization, Curricular Practical Training (CPT), and Severe Economic Hardship authorization for up to 240 days while USCIS processes your application. 
• Submitting Form I-539 after your program end date (during thirty (30) day grace period) is an untimely filing. You will lose all employment authorization immediately and must demonstrate extraordinary circumstances to avoid being denied or required to apply for reinstatement. 
• USCIS will only approve an extension for documented compelling medical conditions or compelling academic reasons. USCIS will deny extensions based on reasons including: 
• Academic Probation or Academic Suspension
• Repeating a course due to poor grades
• Not following your academic program course sequence

Processing Notice:
The I-20 extension cannot be processed until both financial documents and the academic department form are received.
