AI Advisory Panel Charge

The AI Advisory Panel was formed in early 2024 to address concerns related to AI and its use in the classroom. 

The AI Advisory Panel is a university-wide panel charged with guiding the institution鈥檚 exploration, adoption, and governance of artificial intelligence (AI) tools and technologies in academic and administrative contexts. The panel will assess the potential impacts of AI on teaching, learning, and research and provide recommendations to ensure responsible and ethical use across the institution.

Key Responsibilities:

Policy Guidance:

  • Advise on the creation of policies and guidelines for AI usage by faculty, staff, and students, ensuring compliance with legal, ethical, and accreditation standards.
  • Monitor emerging AI-related legal and regulatory developments and recommend updates to university policies as needed.

Educational Initiatives:

  • Promote awareness and understanding of AI technologies through workshops, seminars, and resource development for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Encourage responsible use of AI in teaching and learning, emphasizing academic integrity, critical thinking, and digital literacy.

Ethical Considerations:

  • Explore the ethical implications of AI in higher education, focusing on issues such as bias, privacy, transparency, and fairness.
  • Recommend strategies to mitigate risks and promote equity in AI adoption and deployment.

Impact Assessment:

  • Evaluate the impact of AI tools on student learning outcomes, faculty workload, research productivity, and administrative efficiency.
  • Conduct regular reviews of AI technologies being used or proposed at the institution to assess risks, benefits, and alignment with university values.

External Engagement:

  • Serve as a liaison with external organizations and peer institutions to stay informed about AI advancements and best practices.
  • Collaborate with local, regional, and national initiatives to position the university as a leader in responsible AI integration in higher education.

The panel will meet monthly and report its findings and recommendations to the Provost鈥檚 Office. Subgroups may be formed to address specific topics, such as AI ethics, curriculum development, or data privacy.

By fostering a thoughtful and responsible approach to AI, the panel will help ensure that the university remains a forward-thinking institution that prioritizes innovation, integrity, and equity in the digital age.
